Start of This Linux/Randomness Blog

I'm new to this Blogging thing. I wanted to Start a Blog about My Linux Adventures and the Struggles/Coolness that i find in Linux.
I have very little experience with linux. I'm just getting started but in the Shrort time ive spent with it ive learned a few things.
the Gnome Desktop is not exactly Scary and its full of features while being Fairly lightweight compared to the KDE desktop.
The KDE Desktop ive found out is absolutely Beautiful. it has the Desktop and Structure of Windows. but the Windows look more like MacOS X.
Ive tried to use the terminal but all i can figure out how to do is Shutdown and basic commands.
I am currently on the Windows installed version of Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat. I have found it very nice to have it install and uninstall thru windows but i think im having problems with disk performance. cause im running a reasonable semioverclocked 2.3 to 2.46  Ghz Celeron D with 8?? MB Ram and 7 GB of space cause im just exploring.
as soon as i Get the 20GB of Pictures/music/video off this tiny 40GB hard drive i will install my own openSUSE Build that i created thru SUSEStudio a great Tool for building your own version of linux/ Copying others.
It lets me test it on their servers so if i dont like it i dont have to remove it from my Computer and try  again. also there is no wasting of Discs or Dwownloading.
but I am Afraid of one thing in linux
how in the world do you partition a hard-drive without Corrupting the data. I kinda need to know before I Start with the other Distro's besides Ubuntu cause they all require Partitioning.
but i dont have to worry about that now cause i cant remove those Pictures They have to stay on here cause i cant back them up anywhere else but on the Target computer (the new one at my grandparents)
well i guess thats what you get when you choose to use a free Machine.
I am having some lag problems. I dont know if its a slow hard drive/ Inefficient harddrive from the windows installation which takes 7 GB of Windows's partition and dedicates it to ubuntu instead of another Partition./a Ram Problem or a combination of any of those.
I dont think the Processor is the problem cause a single core 2.46 Ghz processor should be able to take it cause the reccomended processor for Ubuntu is only a 1Ghz processor.
I also have had some trouble where the GUI Crashes... anyone know about that? cause it seems to be random/when i close a program/ when im in a 3D fullscreen Game.
i havent had that problem with Maverick yet but well see.
I like Linux but I Don't want my GUI Crashing so i have to type in Sudo Shutdown Now into the Fullscreen terminal.
If anyone can help with that, that would be great.
In my short time with the Ubuntu Derivatives ive used Kubuntu and Ubuntu. If it was my choice i would run Kubuntu cause its very pretty but it Crashed an awful lot and was Highly unresponsive. Ubuntu Has been much better to me. I got annoyed with Kubuntu Crashing every half hour and Said "screw it" and I installed Ubuntu in its place
One good thing it taught me
i now know that Ctrl alt F1 brings you to the Fullscreen Terminal and Ctrl alt F7 brings you back to your GUI like you never left it.
and ive learned that the Terminal's built in help is not always useful
If only it was more useful or there was a simple Tutorial.
K theres my Rant/Praise of Linux for now time to post
k bye

  1. About partitioning a hard drive- you can't do it with the hard drive mounted (ie if you booted into it) so you have to use a liveCD or flash drive with linux on it.

The easiest and most use partitioning program is GParted. (based off the program parted with a GUI, hence the name)

    About File Systems:
    Linux wants ext3 (or ext4)
Windows wants NTFS (NT file system)
Flash drives like FAT32 (although can use whatever)

    IMPORTANT!!!
if you partition a drive, it acts like 2 drives now. you *can* resize partitions, but not NTFS (you are stuck with whatever size windows you started with)
!!be careful resizing partitions, you don't want to make them so small as to not fit the information that was on them....

In GParted, you decide what partitions to make/delete, and what file system to format them to. You have to click "apply changes" or nothing will happen.

    Tell me how it goes.
